Playing patterns

Selecting a pattern to play

Here's how to find a pattern that you want to play back. Banks A, B, C, D and E each contain 32 patterns, for a total of 160 patterns. You can use either of the following two methods to select and hear a pattern.

Using the dial to select a pattern

  1. Tap the PLAY button to play the pattern. Patterns will automatically loop.
  2. Turn the dial and let’s listen to another pattern. The patterns included in the iELECTRIBE are suitable for a wide range of musical genres.
  3. To stop playback, tap the STOP button.

Using the pattern browser to select a pattern

  1. Tap the BROWSER button. A pattern list will appear.
  2. Tap the pattern that you want to hear; it will play back.
  3. To stop playback, close the browser window by tapping outside of the browser window, then tap the STOP button.
Any changes that are made to a pattern will not be saved unless you write it. For details.
If a new pattern is selected while a pattern is playing, the new pattern will start as soon as the current pattern finishes.

Playing a pattern

You can play patterns in a variety of ways:

Tap the PLAY button. When playback reaches the last step of the pattern, playback will return to the beginning of the pattern and will continue repeating.

Play

Tap the STOP button.

Stop

Tap the LOOP button. The playback will loop within the step where you tapped the button.

Loop play

To play from the beginning of the pattern,"tap the PLAY button during playback.

Playing from the beginning of a pattern

Normally when you switch patterns during playback, the current pattern will finish playing, and then playback will switch to the next pattern. However if you tap the PLAY button while the pattern name is blinking on the display, the pattern will switch instantly.

Immediately switching to the next pattern and play it

If you turn on the LOCK button, the tempo will be maintained even if you switch patterns. This lets you smoothly play multiple patterns in succession.

Playing at a fixed tempo

By using a pattern set you can perform while easily switching between desired patterns to produce full arrangements/songs in realtime. For details, refer to Performing with a pattern set .

Selecting a part

There are eight part buttons, as follows:

  • Four analog-modeled synthesizer parts
  • Four PCM waveform parameters for closed hi-hat, open hi-hat, cymbal, and hand-clap/snare.

When you tap a part button, it will sound and that part will be selected. When you select a part, its part button will light-up green, the rhythm pattern of that part will be shown by the step buttons, and the parameters of that part will appear in the synth section .

During playback, each part button will light-up red at the moment the corresponding part sounds. The step buttons remain lit-up in red to indicate the rhythm pattern of that part, and the playback position is shown in green.

Playing a part's sound

You can listen to each individual sound within each pattern by pressing the part buttons. The sound of each part will differ depending on the pattern.

  1. Tap the PLAY button to play the pattern.
  2. Tap the part buttons to play along with the pattern. This can also be done with the pattern not playing.

Modifying a part's sound

You can modify the sound by using the knobs and buttons of the synth section.

  2. Tap a part button to select the part that you want to edit.
  3. Use the knobs and buttons in the synth section. The sound of the part used in the performance will change accordingly.

Using effects to modify the sound

You can choose from eight master effects. There are two knobs to modify the parameters of each effect. You can also switch the effects on/off for each part, or switch the effects on/off at each step for all parts where the effects are switched on.

  1. Tap the PLAY button to play the pattern.
  2. Choose an effect type.
  3. Use the two knobs to modify the effect.
You can't apply different effects at the same time.

For details on the effect types and parameters, refer to Effect Parameters .

Using Mute and Solo to change things up in realtime

By taking advantage of the Mute and Solo functions you can create structure and development as your song plays.

MUTE

  1. Tap the MUTE button.
  2. Tap the part button that you want to mute (temporarily silence). The lit or dark state of each part button will indicate the Mute status of each part. Unmuted part buttons are lit-up, and muted part buttons are dark.

SOLO

  1. If you tap the SOLO button, you'll hear only the sound of the selected part (the part button that's lit-up green).
  2. If you tap a different part button while in Solo mode, the newly selected part will be soloed.
  3. Tap the SOLO button once again to cancel Solo mode.

Adding distortion to increase the loudness

By adjusting the TUBE GAIN knob you can raise the pattern's overall sense of loudness, or add the warm distortion that's characteristic of vacuum tubes in an analog circuit.

TUBE GAIN

This adjusts the level where the final stage of the output signal is sent through the Virtual Valve Force , which simulates tube saturation.

This parameter can't be saved in the pattern.

Performing with a pattern set

A "pattern set" lets you assign a desired pattern to each of the 64 step buttons, and switch between these patterns. This makes it easy to select your favorite patterns while you perform.

Performing with a pattern set

  1. Tap the PATTERN SET button.
  2. Tap the step button where the desired pattern is registered. The selected step button will light-up green, and the next pattern name will blink in the display.
  3. When the current pattern has finished playing to its last step, playback will switch to the pattern that's registered to the step button that you selected. If you tap the PLAY button while the pattern name is blinking on the display, the pattern will switch immediately.

Changing the timing of a pattern change

You can change the timing of a pattern change by using the pattern change grid function. This function is useful for the performance using the pattern set.

  1. Tap the SETTINGS button. The Settings panel will appear.
  2. On the Pattern Change Grid, select the number of steps that you want before the pattern change.
  3. Select a different pattern. When the position of the pattern that’s playing passes the configured the number of steps, the pattern will be changed. The new pattern plays continuously from the position of the old pattern.

Assigning a pattern in a pattern set

  1. Tap the PATTERN SET button.
  2. Tap the step number where you want to assign the pattern.
  3. Select the pattern which you want to assign by using the dial or the pattern browser.
