Selecting a pattern to start from
From the 160 patterns, choose the preset pattern that's closest to what you have in mind (A and B bank), or the template pattern that’s for basic genres (C bank), or choose an initial pattern that contains no sound or rhythm pattern(D and E bank).
Any changes that are made to a pattern will not be saved unless you write it.
Editing the sound of each part
Tap a part button, and use the knobs and buttons to edit the sound while you listen to the result. You can also edit while the pattern plays back.
- Tap the PLAY button to play the pattern.
- Tap a part button to select the part that you want to edit.
- Use the knobs and buttons in the synth section. The sound of the part used in the performance will change accordingly.
For details on the synth parameters, refer to Synth parameters .
Editing the rhythm pattern
You can create a rhythm pattern in either of two ways: you can tap the step buttons to change each step between lit-up or dark states, or you can tap the part buttons at the desired timing to record the rhythm.
Using the step buttons to edit the rhythm pattern
- Play a pattern ( Listening to the patterns ).
- Tap a part button to select the part that you want to edit. The step buttons are illuminated to indicate the rhythm pattern of the selected part.
- Tap the step buttons to modify the rhythm pattern. A step will turn on (lit) or off (unlit) each time you press it.
- If you want to change the range of steps that are displayed, tap the step page select button. The red LED and step button number indicate which range of steps is shown (the step page). The green LED indicates the position of the currently-playing step page.
Tapping the part buttons in time with the rhythm pattern
- Tap the REC button to enter record-ready mode. The PLAY button will blink.
- Tap the PLAY button to play back the pattern.
- Tap the part buttons at the desired timing. The pattern will play, and overdub-recording will continue as long as the REC button remains lit.
- Tap the STOP button to stop recording. Alternatively, if you tap the REC button without tapping the STOP button, recording will end but playback will continue.
Using mute and solo to help you create the pattern
By using Mute and Solo you can concentrate on just one or a few parts while you edit the rhythm pattern or sound.
MUTE
- Tap the MUTE button.
- Tap the part button that you want to mute (temporarily silence). The lit or dark state of each part button will indicate the Mute status of each part. Unmuted part buttons are lit-up, and muted part buttons are dark.
- To cancel muting for a part, tap the corresponding part button.
SOLO
- If you Tap the SOLO button, you'll hear only the sound of the selected part (the part button that's lit-up green).
- If you Tap a different part button while in Solo mode, the newly selected part will be soloed.
- Tap the SOLO button once again to cancel Solo mode.
Specifying the length of the pattern
The "length" setting specifies the pattern's overall length, and the "last step" setting specifies the number of steps in each unit of the length of the pattern.
- Tap the SETTINGS button. The Settings panel will appear.
- Use the Length slider to specify the overall length of the pattern.
- Use the Laststep slider to specify the number of steps in each unit of the length of the pattern. Normally you'll use 16, but you can use a different setting if you want to create a pattern in an unconventional time signature.
Adding swing to the pattern
"Swing" is the amount of how the timing of the steps in the pattern differs from precisely equal divisions. By adjusting the swing setting, you can modify how the timing of the steps are played. For example you can transform a straight 16-beat by adding a bit of swing to give it a "shuffle" feel. The swing value can be adjusted in the range of 50 to 75 (%). It specifies the timing of the even-numbered steps. A setting of 50 produces a completely straight 16-beat, while a setting of 66 produces a full shuffle.
- Tap the SETTINGS button. The Settings panel will appear.
- Use the SWING slider to specify the swing value.
Adding accents to the pattern
You can add accents (volume dynamics) to the rhythm pattern for each part. The accents are applied to all parts where the accent function is turned on, emphasizing the events at the same location (step).
Turning accents on/off for each part
Here's how to turn the accents on/off for each part.
- Tap the ACCENT button.
- Tap a part button to turn the accents on/off.
Turning accents on/off for each step
You can turn accents on/off for each step for all of the parts where accents are turned on.
- Tap the ACCENT button; the step buttons will indicate the accent pattern.
- Each time you tap a step button, it will turn on/off, allowing you to specify the accent pattern. Listen to the playback while you create the desired accent pattern.
- Use the synth section's LEVEL knob to adjust the amount of the accent. High values will produce a greater difference between on and off, and with a setting of 0 there will be no effect. Listen to the playback while you adjust the setting.
When you tap a part button to make it produce sound, it will sound as if the accent function is on (i.e., you'll hear the emphasized sound.
You can't turn each step's accent on/off independently for individual parts.
Parts whose accent is off will sound at a consistent volume, even if a step's accent is turned on.
Using an effect to modify the sound
You can use one of eight types of master effects and two knobs to apply an effect. You can also turn the effects on/off for each part, or turn the effects on/off for individual steps of the parts where the effects are turned on.
- Tap the PLAY button to play the pattern.
- Choose an effect type.
- Use the two knobs to modify the effect.
For details on the effect types and parameters, refer to Effect parameters .
For details on effect on/off settings, refer to Effects send .
You can't apply different effects at the same time.
Save the pattern
If you want to save the pattern that you created, you must write it. You can save up to 160 patterns.
- Tap the WRITE button. The Pattern browser will open.
- Tap the name of the save-destination pattern. A confirmation dialog box will appear.
- If you want to save the pattern with the same pattern name, tap the Write button. If you want to save the pattern with a different pattern name, tap the Write & Edit Info button, edit the name or tag, and then tap the Save button. If you decide not to save the pattern, tap the Cancel button.
